Vascular examination

Cardiac and circulatory illnesses are not the leading cause of death only in Germany. In most industrialised Western nations, most people die due to illnesses caused by arterial sclerosis or, hardening of the arteries, such as heart attack, stroke or kidney failure. Also, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), also known as 'smoker's leg' or 'intermittent claudication' is both linked to arteriosclerosis. Even today, people affected with PAD are still threatened with leg amputation if not treated.

The most dangerous illnesses often begin suddenly

The highest risk of developing a serious vascular disease exists, most commonly but not exclusively, amongst smokers. Low physical exercise, poor diet resulting in overweight or a high cholesterol count also contribute to higher risk of vascular disease. There are however numerous other factors that contribute to vascular disease such as high blood pressure, stress or diabetes.

Vascular diseases tend to be difficult to treat because they develop slowly and are often only detectable once the patient has identifiable symptoms. Blood vessels can hide fatty acids, cholesterol or calcium that contribute to a gradual deterioration in one's general health. Strokes and heart attacks often occur suddenly and can often, in its first instance, be deadly.

Prevent vascular disease, but how?

To protect oneself from an unexpected health scare and take preventative steps against developing potentially fatal diseases, a complete vascular examination is essential detecting early potential health concerns. In our practice we offer an exhaustive list of examinations that can identify changes that can lead to illness in areas such as coronary heart vessels or carotid arteries. For patients with high blood pressure it is especially important to check the kidney arteries as a narrowing of these vessels often leads to hypertension and, in the worst cases, can lead to kidney failure. Further, smokers and diabetics who have pain in their legs either when walking or lying down should definitely schedule an examination to determine if PAD is present and potentially prevent the need for a leg amputation.

With the latest in modern medical technology, such as MRI and CT scanner, we are able, without any physical invasion, to examine the complete circulatory system. Serious illnesses that may affect the heart and circulatory systems, can, with the help of high resolution imagery be positively diagnosed and treated.
