Real time images using ultrasound waves
The ultrasound or sonogram is a particularly gentle, radiation free diagnostic method. The images are produced using ultrasound waves that 'bounce' off of the organs and vessels to create detailed images that the examining physician can use to make a diagnosis.
Gentle and flexible - sonogram uses
A sonogram can be used for many different purposes and its main advantage is that it is not stressful for the patient. For this reason, the ultrasound is an oft used examination method. In our practice, an ultrasound is often used during a routine examination. Most often the abdomen and thyroid will be examined to determine if there are any metabolic changes or if early signs of cancer can be detected. In treating stroke patients, using a colour Doppler, a special ultrasound examination can be performed.
We also use the ultrasound during our routine female examinations for example in breast cancer examinations with women with dense breast tissue or to clarify or confirm results obtained through a mammogram.
