MRM instead of DMX - often the better choice
Under certain circumstances, a magnetic resonance mammogram (MRM) can be performed in place of a digital mammogram (DMX) to detect for breast cancer. An MRM also produces three-dimensional digital images however, since the procedure is based on magnetic fields and radio waves it is radiation free, unlike a digital mammogram.
MRM as a supplement to a DMX
While a DMX is the still the best method for the early detection of breast cancer, an MRM can supplement a digital mammogram if the results are inconclusive. If a cancerous tumour is present, an MRM can help to determine the 'stage' of the cancer which is vital in determining the correct course of treatment required.
An MRM is also another alternative to a digital mammogram for patients with dense breast tissue or who have breast implants. An MRM can also be used on patients with higher risk factors, i.e. patients with a family history of developing the disease.
